School Resource Officer Shoots Armed Man At Illinois High School

A school resource officer stopped a major tragedy after taking on an armed assailant at Dixon High School in Illinois. Police said that a 19-year-old former student showed up on campus armed with a gun and opened fire on the resource officer. He returned fire striking the 19-year-old in the shoulder. Nobody else was shot during the exchange of gunfire. The suspect was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

The incident occurred in the gymnasium of the school where graduating seniors were preparing to rehearse their upcoming graduation ceremony.

Police said that the shooter was acting alone and that there was no further threat to the school. As a precaution, all the schools in the district were placed on lockdown during the investigation.

City Administrator Danny Langloss, whose daughter was in the gym at the time, said that the officers "brave actions saved a lot of lives."

Aerial footage shows students being evacuated from the school and led onto school buses.
